Public Safety Department

The Public Safety Department is responsible for enhancing the community by educating residents and business owners about the importance of good property maintenance and, when necessary, enforcing regulations designed to correct substandard conditions, which in turn improve property values and create a more attractive community to live, work, and visit.

The City of West Covina appreciates the hard work and dedication of the many residents and business owners who keep their homes and businesses.

To assist neighborhoods and businesses in preserving their appearance, the City has established property maintenance standards which are designed to enhance property values, protect the appearance, integrity, and character of the community, and secure the public's health, safety, and welfare. These standards are part of the City's Municipal Code and establish the minimal maintenance standards for properties.

To ensure that the Municipal Code is followed, Public Safety Officers assist residents and business owners in keeping their properties in compliance. Oftentimes, a friendly conversation will set things in order; however, the Public Safety Officers have the authority to expeditiously abate problems that may endanger the health, safety, and welfare of the community. The abatement process typically requires the clean-up or repair of properties that are found to be in violation of the City's Municipal Code.

City Staff responds promptly to property maintenance complaints and works with property owners in preventing and correcting Code violations. All questions and inquiries are handled confidentially.
