Cadets
The Police Cadet program is a training program designed for career development into the law enforcement field as a police officer. The police cadet is under immediate general supervision and performs non-hazardous duties throughout the police department.
Essential functions include:
- General parking enforcement and issuance of parking citations
- Performing traffic control
- Preparing reports for the impounding of vehicles
- Investigating and writing a selected variety of crime and traffic collision reports when no suspect is present
- Collecting and preserving evidence
- Appearing and testifying in court
- Providing information and assistance to the public at the front counter
- Answering telephone requests for police services
- Collecting money for public requests for documents
- Performing clerical assignments and supporting department personnel
- Processing reports and maintaining records, and files
- Preparing misdemeanor cases for filing with the District Attorney
- Serving subpoenas
- Fingerprinting
- Performing routine jail functions such as custodial checks on inmates, searches, booking, fingerprinting, and other necessary jail duties
- Performing crossing guard duties
- Conducting tours of city facilities
- Maintaining police vehicles
Police cadets must be 18 to 23 years of age and must currently be enrolled in college or in their last year of high school with a GPA of 2.5 or higher, and maintain it while employed to be eligible for the program.
