History of the Sister City Relationship

In 2024, a West Covina delegation led by Mayor Tony Wu and Councilwoman Rosario Diaz traveled to Tainan, Taiwan to celebrate Tainan's 400 years of cityhood and to show support for West Covina's Sister City since 2020.

Information on Tainan, Taiwan

Tainan is located in the southwestern part of Taiwan, along the Taiwan Strait, which borders the island to the west. The city lies approximately 31 miles from Kaohsiung, Taiwan's second-largest city, to the south, and around 186 miles southwest of Taipei, the capital of Taiwan.

Tainan covers an area of approximately 847 square miles, making it the fourth-largest city in Taiwan in terms of land area. The city has a population of around 1.9 million people (as of 2023).

Tainan was officially established in 1662, when the Ming loyalist Koxinga (Zheng Chenggong) ousted the Dutch colonial forces from Taiwan. Koxinga, a military leader who sought to restore the Ming dynasty in China, set up his base in Tainan, making it the first capital of Taiwan under Chinese rule.

Tainan is often referred to as the "City of Temples" due to its high concentration of religious and cultural landmarks.
